Biographical history
Fourth Metropolitan of British Columbia, 1952-1968; sixth Bishop of British Columbia, 1936-1968.
Custodial history
With regard to the Skipton manuscript and associated documents which forms the bulk of the fonds: The British Columbia and Yukon Church Aid Society purchased the manuscript from its author, H. P. K. (Horace) Skipton, in 1914 after deciding not to publish it. After the Society dissolved in 1958, the material came into the possession of Archbishop Sexton who sought to make use of the manuscript himself in some kind of publishing venture. This did not materialize, and the manuscript subsequently was received into the custody of the Archives of the Ecclesiastical Province in 1981 following the death of Archbishop Sexton's wife who had held the manuscript following her husband's death in 1972.
Scope and content
- Fonds consists of manuscript with annotations, correspondence, printed material, notes.
- Includes H. P. K. Skipton's manuscript, "A Life of George Hills, First Bishop of British Columbia" (1912), commissioned by the British Columbia and Yukon Church Aid Society, and related correspondence; and other historical materials gathered by Archbishop Sexton.
