Biographical history
Established in 1888 as the first general hospital in Vancouver by Sister Frances (Frances Dalrymple Redmond), nurse and deaconess, who had come to Vancouver at the invitation of Father Henry G. Fiennes Clinton of St. James' Parish. The hospital was built adjacent to St. James, and has been closely linked with the parish. In 1898 St. Luke's was incorporated under the Charitable Institutions Act. After the death of Sister Frances in the early 1930's, St. Luke's was no longer used as a hospital, but reopened as a women's hostel or guest home.
