Biographical history

Determined to see a permanent medical facility on dry land in Pender Harbour, John Antle of the Coast Columbia Mission (above) successfully petitioned the church, government and local supporters until St. Mary's Hospital opened in Garden Bay on August 16, 1930, on property donated by R. Brynildsen Sr. Nearby, the mission built the "Aged Folks Guest Houses." In 1953, the mission turned St. Mary's over to a local board of directors.

Many locals were born in the hospital, later married in its chapel and, after that, perhaps partied at the Sundowner Cabaret. Pender Harbour’s St. Mary’s Hospital was closed in 1964, replaced by a new facility in Sechelt. The hospital and adjacent residences were sold privately and subsequently developed commercially. Today the old hospital is a ten-room hotel and restaurant, the Sundowner Inn.
